Newtown Festival unveils biggest music line-up ever

One of Sydney’s biggest and most beloved annual events, Newtown Festival, presented by Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, is set to return to Camperdown Memorial Rest Park with a massive line-up of home-grown live music on Sunday, 13 November 2016 from 9:30am to 5:30pm.

Now in its 38th year, Newtown Festival 2016 boasts the largest and most diverse music program in the history of the event, which will be headlined by four-piece Sydney band, The Griswolds, just two days after the release of their new album, High Times For Low Lives.

In the spirit of the Newtown Festival 2016 theme, “Home is where the heart is”, The Griswolds will be back on home soil following a tour of the US to join more than 40 up-and-coming and established acts performing across four stages.

There’s something for everyone as the Federation stage, Heart Beat stage, La Toosh stage and Young Hearts stage showcase everything from rap to rockabilly, world music to dance, and kids disco to DJs.

This year’s biggest stage, the Federation stage, will feature an eclectic musical smorgasbord with performances from The Griswolds, L-fresh the Lion, All Our Exes Live in Texas, Richard in Your Mind, Stereogamous (Paul Mac and Jonny Seymour) and Purple Sneakers DJs – to name a few.

An exciting line-up of break through and emerging artists will perform on the Heart Beat stage, including Newtown Neighbourhood Centre Sydneyvision Song Contest winners, Dweeb City, as well as the like of Shining Bird, Fortunes, Mossy, World Champion, Polographia and more.

The La Toosh stage is little stage that's full of surprises – from rockabilly to honky tonk to New Orleans street music. Expect the unexpected!

Families are in for a treat as the Young Hearts stage (formerly Essential stage) returns with kid’s entertainment in the morning, rolling into amazing acts for the whole family in the afternoon, including performances from Teeny Tiny Stevies, Kiddo Disco and Hot Potato Band.

One of Australia’s most-loved musicians and Newtown local, Sarah Blasko is the Newtown Festival 2016 ambassador, having performed at the festival early in her career in 2003 and 2004.

“I’ve lived in and around Newtown for more than 10 years and lots of my early, fond (if not a bit hazy) memories involve Newtown Festival. This year I’m really proud to be an ambassador. I love the place and the people of Newtown a great deal, and I feel really fortunate to call it my home,” said Blasko.

Newtown Festival is a non-profit event hosted by Newtown Neighbourhood Centre that aims to raise much-needed funds to support people at risk of homelessness in the inner west and to protect the ‘Newtown vibe’. All performers generously donate their time and talent to the festival.

Entry is by donation at the gate via cash or PayPass, with all proceeds helping homeless people in the community get on a pathway to finding a roof over their head.

Newtown Festival, Director, Gill Minervini said: “We’re excited to present Newtown Festival’s biggest and most eclectic music line-up to date and to be bringing together so many of Sydney’s best acts for one massive day of entertainment, for a really great cause.

“Newtown Festival wouldn’t be possible without the extraordinary generosity of our performers who donate their time to help raise funds to support people at risk in our community, so we’re asking all music fans to turnout and make a donation at the gate.”

In addition to the stellar live music line-up, festival favourites including the Writers Tent hosted by independent bookshop Better Read Than Dead and Dog Show hosted by Sassy Treats will return. There will also be 40 food stalls and Newtown Locals collaborating to create five delicious dishes for just $10 each, five bars selling Young Henrys brews, and 300 market stalls selling arts, crafts, fashion, bespoke products and more.

Newtown Festival 2016 is proudly supported by City of Sydney, Inner West Council, Sydney Airport, Sydney Water, Urbane, Newtown Locals, 2SER 107.3, FBi Radio, The Music, Genea, Proud & Punch, Dresden, Dendy, Westpac, Better Read Than Dead, Environmental Enterprise, Garden Games, GoGet, Green Living Centre, Makerspace, Nathan Farrell Entertainment, Empty Suitcase, Kids Edible Garden, Reverse Garbage, and Sassy Treats.
