Work commences on T1 departures

Sydney Airport has commenced a major transformation of T1 departures, with the first stage of works now underway.

“Passengers travelling overseas will notice a lot of activity over the next 20 months as we start an exciting transformation of T1 departures, designed to create a truly world-class airport experience,” Sydney Airport managing director and chief executive officer Kerrie Mather said.

“We are taking the opportunity to transform T1 at the same time as the arrival of our new duty free partner in February and deliver a brand new departures experience for everyone travelling internationally from Sydney Airport.

“This project will revitalise Australia’s gateway airport, injecting a real sense of place and personality that will be uniquely Sydney.”

The benefits for passengers will include:

  • Faster access and improved wayfinding to airline gates
  • More seating capacity
  • Wider walkways
  • Brand new shopping and dining outlets
  • Environmentally friendly design features

To minimise disruption to passengers, the works will be staged over 20 months with the first completed areas to open towards the end of 2015.

The first stage of the redevelopment has commenced, with construction starting in the middle of the terminal with the duty free areas and other retailers to be relocated.

Additional staff and directional signage have been provided to assist customers during the works.

The Sydney Airport website and free apps will contain all the latest updates and information on duty free, retail and food and beverage options during construction.

Customers will also be able to order duty free online for pick up at the airport.

More retailers and exciting new dine-in and takeaway options will be announced throughout the year.

“We have invested $2.5 billion in new terminal and aviation infrastructure since 2002 and are investing a further $1 billion over the next four years across the airport, which will create a significant number of jobs,” Ms Mather said.

“With more than 13 million people travelling through T1 each year and a route network of close to 100 destinations, our focus is on delivering a world-class airport experience for our diverse range of passengers.”
