PYREX CONTINUES TO BAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

PYREX CONTINUES TO BAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

Iconic brand celebrates centenary milestone

  • More than 65 million Pyrex products have been sold in Australia
  • One in five Australian households own a Pyrex product

Pyrex®, the iconic kitchenware brand, is celebrating its 100-year anniversary in 2015, recognising a century of innovation, as well as countless kitchen creations baked across the world.

The history of the Pyrex brand spans from humble beginnings in the early 1900s after a fortuitous baking encounter. Corning Glass Works, the inventors of Pyrex glass bakeware, originally used strengthened glass for lantern globes on railways. The progression from railways to kitchens came about by chance when the wife of one of the company’s employees used a piece of the same heat-resistant glass to bake a cake. After noting several remarkable findings including a shorter cooking time and more uniform baking, Corning Glass Works set about perfecting this new invention and an iconic brand was born.

Fast forward to 2015 and the Pyrex range features more than 100 products. Over the last 100 years, billions of Pyrex glassware pieces have been sold worldwide, including more than 65 million in Australia. The brand is synonymous with quality kitchenware and its popularity has stood the test of time with an estimated one in five Australian households owning a Pyrex product.

Kylie McKinnon, General Manager at World Kitchen Australia, said: “The original line of Pyrex bakeware included 12 items which revolutionised home cooking worldwide, many of which are still available today. The current glass casserole dish, loaf pan, pie plate and custard cup are all examples of products that have stood the test of time”

“100 years ago the team behind the Pyrex brand created the glass baking category and we believe the next generation of family cooks will continue to use Pyrex glass products for 100 years to come.”

This year, the Pyrex brand embarks on a host of anniversary celebrations including the release of a limited edition 100-year anniversary collection, a partnership with dessert creative and social media baking sensation Katherine Sabbath and a giant, world-record breaking Pyrex measuring jug which is travelling across the United States.

Pyrex by numbers:

  • More than 65 million Pyrex products have been sold in Australia
  • One in five Australian households own a Pyrex product
  • The iconic Pyrex measuring jug is the most popular product worldwide
  • It is believed that over 75 million Pyrex measuring jugs, representing a total capacity of 14 million litres, have been sold to date worldwide
  • More than 300,000 Pyrex measuring jugs are sold each year

The limited edition anniversary collection will include the iconic measuring jug, pie plate and dot themed glass storage containers and is a must-have for avid bakers and cooks alike. It will be available in David Jones, Myer, Big W, Woolworths and selected independent retailers from April 2015 with prices ranging from $9.95 to $16.95 per piece.
