Give the gift of play this Starlight Day!
Starlight's biggest annual fundraising event - Friday, 1 May 2015
Event: Starlight Day
Date: Friday, 1 May 2015
Description: Make a donation to give the gift of play to more than 30,000 sick kids
Starlight Children’s Foundation needs your help this Starlight Day, Friday, 1 May 2015 to give the gift of play to more than 30,000 seriously ill children and their families around Australia.
Held nationally, Starlight Day is the organisation’s biggest annual fundraising event and aims to raise $1.3 million this May to continue to brighten the lives of sick kids and their families through Starlight’s uniquely Australian hospital programs.
Thousands of Starlight volunteers will hit the streets on Starlight Day to sell merchandise and collect donations in shopping centres, office foyers, central business districts and train stations across the country.
Anyone can help Starlight by simply making a donation throughout April and May at www.starlight.org.au.
Starlight receives no government funding and relies solely on the community to deliver its Starlight Express Room and Captain Starlight hospital programs which distract sick kids from their treatment through play therapy.
Starlight Express Rooms provide a medical-free respite for sick kids, giving them the opportunity to build self-esteem and social skills, and simply be kids again. While health professionals focus on treating illness, Captain Starlights capture a child’s imagination in the Starlight Express Rooms, turning their pain, fear and stress into joy, fun and laughter.
Starlight Chief Executive Officer Louise Baxter said: "Every minute of every day a child is admitted to hospital across Australia. This Starlight Day, we’re appealing for donations to allow our hospital programs to operate seven days a week, to support more sick kids and their families.
“Living with serious illness or disability can ‘steal away’ simple childhood experiences that we all take for granted. A donation of just $39 can give these precious moments back to a sick child, providing them and their family with an environment conducive to play through our Captain Starlight and Starlight Express Room programs.”
Starlight supports all hospitalised children and their families, regardless of illness, injury or age. Every child admitted to a children’s hospital in Australia can access the Starlight Express Room with their parents and siblings, giving the family a unique opportunity to reconnect.
Individuals, corporations, schools and community groups are encouraged to get involved this Starlight Day, to donate, volunteer and help fundraise.
Starlight Day is proudly supported nationally by EB Games, Big W and Woolworths. To find out how you can volunteer, fundraise, or to make a donation, go to www.starlight.org.au.
