Australians more connected than ever to internet-enabled TVs

Australians are accessing more services through their internet-enabled TVs with 50% of FreeviewPlus certified TVs now connected.
Internet-capable TVs are now in 30%* of homes and this number is growing steadily as more hardware is available at competitive price points.
Freeview CEO Liz Ross said: “Australians are known as early adopters and the market is developing rapidly as we are leading the way with the level of FTA services and user experience available via FreeviewPlus.
“When we look at total panel TV sales year on year, we can see that connected TVs are growing overall and they are attributing to a greater share of TV panel sales with approximately 15% share growth.”
There are now 10 FreeviewPlus-certified manufacturers in the Australian market including Sony, LG, Samsung, Hisense, Changhong, Hitachi and Bauhn. The first PVR was recently launched by AerialBox in addition to its set-top box. TEAC has also released a set-top box.
FreeviewPlus-certified panel TV manufacturers represent 83% of all Smart TV sales with 94% of their connected TV range now HbbTV certified.
Launched in September 2014, the FreeviewPlus service uses hybrid TV technology, which seamlessly combines broadband and broadcast TV. The technology also enables the free-to-air networks to introduce a range of new broadband services.
FreeviewPlus offers an array of features including a seven-day, easy-to-use EPG, access to available free-to-air Catch Up services in one place on the TV and the ability to browse and search programs across the next seven days.
FreeviewPlus TVs, STBs and the PVR are available in all major Australian retailers across the country including Harvey Norman, David Jones, Dick Smith, The Good Guys, Bing Lee, MYER, Retravision, Betta and JB Hi-Fi.
