Social media is a fantastic tool for brands to engage with their communities and get added mileage out of their own content. But for those looking to do a little more with their social media presence, particularly mid-size brands, there is significant value in looking further afield than your well established social platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to some of the up and coming social media networks.

Back when Myspace was a thing, it was hard to imagine that anything other than top friends and customisable profile pages could be the go-to for all our social media needs. Yet, in the blink of an eye, Facebook came along and before we knew it Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Vine had all cropped up providing us with services we didn’t know we ever needed.

Without being able to predict the role emerging social media platforms will one day hold on our lives, there is something to be said for trying to stay ahead of the curve. Establishing a presence on new and emerging social platforms while they’re in their infancy means if they happen to, like Instagram, surge in popularity you’ll have the jump on your competitors.

In 2014, Instagram was the fastest growing social media platform, rounding off the year with over 300 million followers, even beating out Twitter. Initially dismissed by lots of brands who thought its business possibilities were limited, early adopters who were willing to take the plunge and dedicate their resources into building a solid community, have begun reaping the rewards.

According to a report by Business Insider, without evening taking into account well-crafted social media strategy, there is a strong correlation between early adoption of social media platforms and a the size of your following in the long run – food for thought. 

If you’re up for really thinking outside the box, the benefits of early adoption are not just limited to your brands representation in the digital space. Recently launched cryptocurrency-driven social network Reveal is literally paying early adopters for their support with their own cryptocurrency.
