Benedict Sand & Gravel partners with Greenfleet to offset carbon
Benedict Sand & Gravel, a major wholesaler and retailer of quarried, recycled and landscaping products, has partnered with not-for-profit environmental organisation Greenfleet to offset greenhouse gas for all deliveries made to Sydney Water as part of their five-year tender.
For every 1,000 tonnes of material delivered to Sydney Water, Benedict Sand & Gravel plants 38 trees. From July 2010 to August 2011, Benedict has planted 1,150 trees and offset 308 tonnes of carbon.
A key component of its tender to Sydney Water, Benedict Sand & Gravel proposed to offset the carbon emissions generated through transport of quarried and recycled materials to all Sydney Water sites throughout the greater Sydney region.
As well as offsetting greenhouse gas, this action also helps to improve water quality, reduce soil degradation and provide essential habitat for native species.
Benedict Industries Sales and Marketing Manager Mick Williams said: “Planting trees is an essential step to creating permanent, biodiverse native forests that offset greenhouse gas. It’s simple and effective.
“With 2011 being the International Year of the Forests, we feel it’s important – now and always – to positively contribute to environment issues.”
To ensure that carbon credits can be certified, it is essential to ensure the forest will exist for 100 years.
