Annual Walk4Life event aims to raise $200,000 for brain cancer research
Established by world renowned neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo, Cure for Life Foundation will host its annual Walk4Life family-friendly event on Sunday, 13 November 2011 to raise $200,000 for brain cancer research.
Walk4Life sees participants walk, run or jog for an hour around the 2km Ponds Course at Sydney’s Centennial Park before enjoying a barbecue in one of Sydney’s most beautiful parkland areas.
Cure For Life Foundation’s Chairman Jo Quin said: “We’re asking Australians to don their favourite runners and join Dr Charlie Teo and his family in a bid to raise urgently needed funds for brain cancer research.
“While it’s a fun day out, the message is very serious. Funding for further research into brain cancer is imperative with three quarters of patients not surviving beyond two years.”
Cure For Life Foundation is one of Australia’s leading not-for-profit organisations in the area of brain cancer research, which is the most under-funded of all cancer research.
Dr Charlie Teo said: “I started Cure For Life Foundation because the mortality rates for people with brain cancer were, and continue to be, simply too high. Change is vital, which is why Walk4Life was established to make a difference.”
While survival rates for other forms of cancer have improved over the past decade, mainly through the application of extensive funding for research, the number of deaths from brain cancer remains unchanged. In fact, it is the leading cause of cancer death in children and in males under 44 and the second leading cause of cancer death in females under 44¹.
Brain cancer is also ranked number one out of 17 other malignant cancers in terms of years of life lost².
Walk4Life participants must register by 5pm on Friday, 4 November 2011. Cost is $30 adults, $20 children and $90 family (two adults/two children) with 100 per cent of funds going to Cure For Life Foundation for important brain cancer research.
