The Australian Youth Orchestra returns for three Sydney-exclusive performances
Australia’s most toured symphony orchestra, The Australian Youth Orchestra, will perform a series of Sydney-exclusive performances presented by Sydney Symphony at the Sydney Opera House on July 20, 21 and 22.
At the heart of the program is the world debut of Carl Vine’s Violin Concerto commissioned by the Hon Justice Jane Mathews for the AYO and soloist Dene Olding. Vine describes the concerto as ‘for orchestra’, allowing the talents of the AYO players to shine.
“The Australian Youth Orchestra is the premier performance training facility for musicians in this country. That said, the standard of young performers emerging from its programs, particularly in the last decade, has been truly exceptional,” said Vine.
The program also includes Debussy’s vast imaginings of the sea in La Mer and Nielsen’s brilliant and rhythmic Symphony No. 5 to showcase the blazing talents of Australia’s finest young players to their fullest advantage under the baton of Danish conductor Thomas Dausgaard.
“The Australian Youth Orchestra brings 92 of Australia’s best classical musicians together to give life to these masterpieces,” said AYO CEO Colin Cornish.
“The Sydney Symphony presenting another great Australian orchestra in the country’s most prestigious venue offers AYO an incredible opportunity to inspire our audience,” added Cornish.
“The Sydney Symphony is committed to nurturing talented young musicians,” said Sydney Symphony Managing Director Rory Jeffes.
“We are delighted to be presenting the young guns of The Australian Youth Orchestra and I'm sure we will be welcoming a number of these talented young players to the ranks of the Sydney Symphony in the years ahead,” he added.
The concerts are near capacity and will be held on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 July at 6.30pm and Friday 22 July at 11am at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. Tickets are from $35 (booking fee of $6.00 - $8.50 may apply). More information can be found at www.ayo.com.au.
